Plumstead Carpet Cleaners Health and Safety Policy

Plumstead Carpet Cleaners is committed to providing professional carpet, rug and upholstery cleaning services in a manner that protects the health, safety and welfare of our employees, clients, visitors and members of the public. We recognise our duty to manage risks arising from our work activities and to promote a safe and healthy working environment at all times.

Policy Statement and Objectives

Our objective is to prevent injury, ill health and damage to property by identifying and controlling hazards associated with carpet and soft furnishing cleaning, stain treatment and related activities carried out at clients premises and any locations where our teams operate.

To achieve this, we will consistently assess risks, put effective control measures in place and ensure that all staff understand and follow safe systems of work. Health and safety considerations form an integral part of planning and delivering our services.

Management Responsibilities

The management of Plumstead Carpet Cleaners has overall responsibility for implementing and reviewing this Health and Safety Policy. Management will provide clear direction, adequate resources and competent supervision to ensure that:

Health and safety risks are identified, assessed and controlled so far as is reasonably practicable. Safe working practices are established for all cleaning activities, including the use of machinery, tools and chemical products. All equipment is properly maintained, inspected and, where necessary, tested. Staff receive suitable information, instruction and training relevant to their roles. Accidents, incidents and near misses are recorded, investigated and used to improve future practice. This policy is reviewed periodically and updated in line with changes in legislation, guidance or the nature of our work.

Employee Responsibilities

All employees of Plumstead Carpet Cleaners have a legal and moral duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions or omissions. Employees are required to:

Cooperate with management to enable compliance with this policy and legal requirements. Follow the training, instructions, risk assessments and safe systems of work that have been provided. Use all equipment, chemicals and personal protective equipment correctly and report any defects immediately. Refrain from interfering with or misusing anything provided in the interest of health and safety. Report hazards, unsafe conditions, accidents, incidents or near misses without delay.

Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work

Before commencing cleaning work, we will carry out suitable risk assessments for our typical tasks, including hot water extraction, low moisture cleaning, stain removal, spot treatment, furniture moving and use of portable machinery. Site specific hazards at clients premises, such as access issues, slip and trip risks, electrical systems and occupant sensitivities, will be considered and, where necessary, additional control measures will be applied.

We will develop and follow safe systems of work based on these risk assessments. These may include specific instructions for cable management, machine operation, chemical handling, ventilation, manual handling of equipment, and control of noise, water and waste.

Chemical Safety and Control of Substances

Carpet and upholstery cleaning involves the use of detergents, pre sprays, spotters and other cleaning agents. Plumstead Carpet Cleaners will ensure that all such substances are assessed and used in accordance with manufacturer guidance and applicable regulations.

We will maintain safety data information for relevant products and make this information available to staff. Where necessary, we will substitute or reduce hazardous products, limit exposure, provide appropriate personal protective equipment and ensure adequate ventilation during and after treatment. Staff will be trained in safe storage, dilution, application and disposal procedures, including avoiding mixing incompatible products.

Personal Protective Equipment

Where risks cannot be adequately controlled by other means, suitable personal protective equipment will be provided at no cost to employees. This may include gloves, eye protection, masks or respirators, protective footwear and clothing appropriate to the task.

Employees must use the protective equipment provided, keep it in good condition and report any loss or damage. Management is responsible for ensuring that personal protective equipment is suitable, maintained and replaced when necessary.

Manual Handling and Equipment Safety

Our work often involves lifting, carrying and moving machines, hoses and accessories between vehicles, buildings and different levels. To reduce the risk of musculoskeletal injury, we will provide guidance and training on safe manual handling techniques, use of lifting aids where available, and planning of routes to minimise unnecessary carrying.

All machinery, including carpet cleaning machines, vacuums and associated tools, will be maintained in safe working condition. Employees must check equipment before use, follow operating instructions and immediately stop using any item that appears unsafe.

Client Premises, Public Safety and Environmental Considerations

When working in homes, offices or other occupied properties, we will take reasonable steps to protect clients, their visitors and the public. This includes using warning signs where appropriate, managing cables and hoses to reduce trip hazards, controlling access to the work area and maintaining good housekeeping throughout the job.

We will minimise disturbance, reduce slip risks from wet surfaces and ensure that any waste water and residues from cleaning are disposed of responsibly and in line with local requirements.

Training, Communication and Consultation

Plumstead Carpet Cleaners will provide appropriate induction and ongoing training so that employees understand the hazards associated with our services and know how to manage them. This may include emergency procedures, safe operation of equipment, chemical safety, first aid awareness and incident reporting.

We will communicate relevant health and safety information clearly and encourage staff to raise concerns, suggest improvements and participate in discussions about safe working practices.

Emergency Procedures and Incident Reporting

Employees must be familiar with emergency arrangements, including fire procedures at client premises, safe evacuation routes and methods for summoning medical assistance. Spills, chemical splashes, electrical faults or any incident presenting immediate danger must be dealt with promptly and reported to management.

All accidents, injuries and near misses must be recorded and reported so that causes can be investigated and corrective actions implemented to prevent recurrence.

Policy Review

This Health and Safety Policy reflects the current activities of Plumstead Carpet Cleaners and will be reviewed regularly to ensure it remains effective and relevant. Updates will be communicated to all employees, and copies of the policy will be available for clients and other interested parties on request.
